Resources at School
Perhaps the most difficult aspect of protecting our children is keeping them safe when we are not around them. We like to think of teachers and school administrative staff as trustworthy, conscientious individuals capable of defending our kids against abuse, and for the vast majority, this is an accurate assessment. However, kids at school outnumber grown-ups by a factor of twenty, making it hard to ensure the safety of every little one. Additionally, about one in ten thousand educators is arrested for child sexual abuse every year, and while that number may seem low, it’s quite a lot higher than zero. For these reasons, it’s important to be vigilant in giving our children the tools to protect themselves at school.
Stop It Now!
Stop It Now! is an organization dedicated to promoting recognition of child sexual abuse as a preventable public health problem. Of particular value to parents are their Tip Sheets and Warning Signs:
Danger At School
Avoiding school, of course, is not an option when it comes to keeping our kids safe; nor is attending school with them a possibility. As such, it’s incumbent on us to provide them with the skills and knowledge to protect themselves against abuse. But before we can adequately educate our children in this way, we must first educate ourselves.
